Food Waste in France

Individuals

Arash Derambash is a councilman that represents the locality of Courbevoire. After spending many nights collecting food from dumpsters and redistributing the yield to food banks, he launched a petition. The petition stated that he wanted to make sure that 10 million people would not needlessly go hungry (Derambash, 2015). The petition was launched on change.org and can be found here. The movement quickly gained popularity and after four months had over 200 thousand signatures. The open letter called on action from president Francois Holland and prime minister Manuel Valls. After seeing the success of the petition Mr. Derambash has realized the extent of the problem and wants to extend the legislation to all end of line retailers (Freij, 2015).

Guillame Garot is a socialist MP and was an integral part of the drafting process as he said to have created the proposed bill after consultation with Mr. Derambash. He is also the former food minister and believes that France will be seen as the most progressive country in the world with regards to food waste (Samuel, 2015).

Jean Pierre Decooi is a member of the centre right party formally referred to as the Republicans. This man is also extremely passionate about combating food waste and helped Mr. Garot and Mr. Dereambash with the drafting process. Combined these three men are believed to be the most important figures that contributed to the passing of the legislation (Chrisafis, 2015).
