Elucidate E-Literature

Introduction

So What is "Public Secret"?

Public Secret is the E-Literature that I choose to analyze and can be found on "The Electronic Literature Collection" in Volume 2. Public Secret is an interactive literature created and designed by Sharon Daniel and Erik Loyer which consists of interviews with female inmates of the CCWF, the Central California Women’s Facility. Through this literature, we follow Sharon Daniel into the facility and are shared the testimonies and experiences these women have inside the prison.

How does the literature work?

As you open the link to the work, you are presented with an oral introduction made by Sharon Daniels herself where she describes her experience going to the facility. From the surrounding space of the facility, where she mentions the 3 million dollar fence and the manicured laws surrounding the prison to the separation that is made between the inside and outside of the prison. As you browse through the piece, you are presented with statements that are said by the incarcerated women and other people in the prison. When you click or hover over on the statements, you can listen or read the transcript of their stories.

Connection to Our Theme

Social Justice is related to this topic because oftentimes people don't see inmates are regular human beings who deserve the same equal human rights. Instead they are seen as inhumane people due to the fact that they have made a mistake. In addition, the conditions that are presented in the jails are so bad, yet no one is standing up for the inmates even though they know and see in the news all the time how bad it is.
