Facilitating Student Agency: Gradual Release
Background:
Taryn Keyser teaches 6th grade at Vista MIddle School. Ms. Keyser shares her story of how she is using the Learning Management System (LMS) to have students monitor their own learning. She is exploring the benefits of what it means for students to have access to missing, upcoming assignments, and extra credit opportunities from anywhere and at anytime. Ms. Keyser has begun to leverage the benefits of full LMS implementation. She is building student agency awareness, and has made students responsible for their own learning. An issue she is currently facing is student access to technology. Although this is an obstacle, she has overcome it by having students check their grades and work on the LMS a few times throughout grading periods. This is how Ms. Keyser advocates for her students to have access to high-quality curriculum instruction regardless of the current obstacles she is facing with technology.

The LMS has offered a venue for Ms. Keyser to empower her students. She is leveraging the LMS to have students communicate their academic goals. She has provided a communication venue for students to reflect on their goals and increase their sense of self-efficacy. Even with limited resources, Taryn Keyser offers her students a way to keep them informed of their progress and take an active role for their own learning.
