Using the LMS to Flip the Traditional Learning Environment
Background:
Bryant Cooper teaches Mathematics at Poly High School. As a novice teacher, Mr. Cooper see’s the importance of integrating technology into his lessons. He already had predetermined to either use Google sites or Google Classroom as tools for technology integration. When he was introduced to Schoology, he liked the intuitiveness and benefits it offered to personalize instruction. Mr. Cooper realized and took advantage of the Learning Management System (LMS) potential and used this to flip his classroom, where his students can go learn new concepts at their own pace. Mr. Cooper is using the LMS to make his content available for all learners, at all times. He cultivates student agency by making class materials accessible to students outside of his classroom, and making students responsible for their own learning. Students are expected to go over class materials posted in the LMS, and participate and ask questions in discussions posts. Mr. Cooper also shares all class notes with all his students so they can access them and ask any clarifying questions at any time. Mr. Cooper explained that he flipped his classroom to give student access to his courses 24/7. In his young teaching experience, Mr. Copper recognizes the potential of making resources to students available at all times. He also incorporated a system of accountability that makes sure students interact and respond to classroom material. These promising practices target a new generation of students where most have immediate information accessible. He engages students in an online platform where students can personalize pacing of learning math concepts, manage their time, and keep on task.
