Redefining Collaboration, Communication and Professional Development
Background:
Dharma Hernandez is the Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Coordinator for the Division of Instruction. Mrs. Hernandez started to use the Learning Management System (LMS), Schoology, during the initial phase of Secondary ELA textbook adoption. Initially she decided to use Schoology courses to develop a professional development platform where teachers can interact with ELA materials. Mrs. Hernandez started various curriculum groups to share resources with teachers and create a collaborative space. Currently she is collaborating with vendors and the Content Management Coordinator to have full curriculum app integration of textbook adoptions so that teachers and students can have complete access to textbook materials within the LMS.Learning Management System Audience for this example:

Communication throughout the District is always challenging. We have many teachers that have cultivated promising practices and have found unique ways of fostering student agency, yet many of our colleagues are not able to share these experiences with other teachers. LAUSD’s LMS offers the endless possibilities and avenues for teachers to collaborate and share promising practices and ideas. With implementation of the LMS, the constraints of funding, time, and space for professional development becomes less of an obstacle.
ISTE Standards Alignment:
- Empowered Learner
- Creative Communicator
The Learning Management System offers teachers unique opportunities to share ideas, virtually visit each other’s classroom, and collaboratively create resources. Before ELA personalized LMS practices, this concept was inconceivable because of the constraints of time, funding, and space. Dharma Hernandez has empowered a large ELA teacher audience to start sharing promising practices, ideas, and resources.
