Multimodal Composition

In basic terms, multimodal composition is the use of multiple medias to create on final work. Examples of multimodal composition can be found throughout the many assaignment that I have done for this class this past semester. This portfolio itself is a great example of this concept. As you have seen throughout this project, I have used text, images, videos and gifs.  All of these pieces of media are being used to pull each idea int his portfolio together.
There are five elements that truly make up multimodal composition. Those five elements are as listed:
1. Oral
2. Linguistic
3. Visual
4. Spatial
5. Gestural
If we follow this list, we visit the oral element of multimodal composition first. This is where the videos come in. Any audio that you add to a project can be listed as an oral element. This gives the reader or the viewer of your project the option of how they would like to experience the point that you are trying to put across. They can either watch the video and have someone tell them the point, or they can read the text that has been written.
That brings us to out next element; linguistics. This is all of the written text that is within a project. This is the most traditional way of creating a piece of writing. Just the written word. what multimodal composition is all about is adding to that text to offer different ways to experience a piece of writing. The text itself still remains an important element in multimodal composition, although it may not be deemed the most important.
Next up is the visual element. This includes any images such as pictures or even drawings, that you wish to include in a project. This is a very important element in any project. This project itself is proof of that. Every page includes images that back up the main idea of that page. The whole point of this is to give the reader the ability to experience the entire through images if they so wish. If images are chosen correctly this can be easily done.
Next is the spatial element. This is just how everything is arranged on the page in relation to each other. The space that you put between each element is important so that the whole project does not look sloppy or muddle the meaning that you are trying to put forth. How things are arranged can add to or take away from your meaning so it is important to keep spatial issues in mind when creating a composition.
Lastly is the gestural element of multimodal composition. This can easily be linked to the oral element of the project. Any facial expressions and body language that are contained within a video can have an impact on how it is perceived, so it is important to keep this element in mind.
