Changing Your Reality

We view the world through our senses and our perception. Virtual and Augmented realities give us the opportunity to change the reality we occupy and how we perceive it. These changes in reality offer us the ability to visit places and interact with objects that might otherwise be impossible to experience.

Augmented Reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real-world are "augmented" by computer-generated perceptual information.

There are promising open source projects that will ultimately allow you to easily implement AR. But currently the best available (non-CS intensive) solution for augmented reality is a project that was developed under the name Aurasma. It was subsequently purchased by HP. That commercial status leaves it open to monetization or vulnerable to being axed by HP.

So...a caveat: this is a demonstration of what is possible on this platform that is likely to go away or, at a minimum, will eventually require a subscription.

Having said that, in this workshop you’ll begin augmenting the world around you with HP Reveal. You’ll learn how to blend virtual objects into the real world and then interact with them. To get started, you'll need to sign up for an account here.

Click here for a tutorial that will allow you to embed an AR instance into a textbook.

Virtual Reality (VR) is an interactive, computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment.

We will then take a tour through the current state of VR, using some of the photogrammetric models we built in Session III and experiencing them inside a fully virtual world with the help of the Oculus Rift system.
