Concrete Countertops: Renovation of the Old Countertops with Concrete

concrete countertops

Concrete can be used not only for the production of monolithic slabs. With concrete it is quite realistic to restore old surfaces of concrete countertops. In this case, the costs will be one order less. Below, we are going to talk how DIY old kitchen countertops are restored.

Kitchen countertop is the most loaded and important part of kitchen furniture. But no matter how carefully we have chosen material for it, with time it gradually loses its presentable appearance. In addition to the loss of appearance, there may be more significant damage: coating peeling, base loosening, and appearance of cracks, chips and deep scratches to the base.

Materials that are required

Since a too thick layer is not required in this case, instead of usual solution we will use:

·         concrete countertop mix for finishing;

·         acrylic sealant;

·         varnish for concrete,

·         container for concrete countertop mix preparation;

·         2 spatulas (20 mm and 10 mm);

·         sandpaper;

·         industrial mixer;

·         sander.

Note! The amount of concrete countertop mix must be determined according to the area covered. Usually, a material consumption is indicated on the package an on average is 1.2 – 1.5 kg per 1 m2 with a layer thickness of 1 mm.

Surface preparation

Concrete countertops for kitchen are often made of MDF, on which scratches, chips, temperature defects and grease spots appear during operation. Before applying concrete, surface must be cleaned of all contaminants. Pay special attention to the fat residues – they can be cleaned with kitchen detergents. If silicone sealant is present on the surface, then it should also be removed, as the concrete has a weak adhesion to similar materials. After the surface has been completely cleaned, it needs to be treated with coarse-grained 25-H or 20-H sandpaper. The purpose of this process is to improve adhesion of concrete to the old surface by creating a lot of scratches. After sandpaper processing, the countertop should be washed and allowed to dry completely.

Concrete countertop mix application

The technology of making concrete countertop mix can be read on the packaging. Usually, it is diluted with water with ratio of 2 to 1. The main thing is that the consistency is not too liquid or thick, since in this case the process of applying the solution to plate will become more complicated.

Note! First, prepare small portion of the mixture to determine water amount to obtain the optimum viscosity. Further on, strictly observe this proportion. Even the slightest discrepancies can affect the shade of dried concrete.

Application of concrete on the flat area of a countertop is carried out with using a wide spatula, while the ends are treated with a narrow spatula. Distribute of concrete countertop mix over the surface with slow and smooth movements to reduce the possibility of bubbles. The thickness of the applied layer should not be large - 1-2 mm is absolutely enough.

Concrete grinding

After the layer dries completely (it will take about 24 hours), the concrete countertops are polished, for which coarse-grained emery is used. Pay special attention to surface smoothness – when touching with a hand, there should not be any unevenness.

Note! Grinding concrete is a dirty work. It is necessary to be prepared that the dust in the kitchen will be everywhere. Therefore, it is better not to perform such work without a special mask.

To make robust and solid DIY concrete countertops for kitchen, it is necessary to apply 3-4 layers of concrete countertop mix, each of which is polished after drying. If coarse-grained sandpaper is used to treat first layers, then the last layer, in addition to roughing, is subjected to finishing grinding with fine-grained emery.

Waterproofing and varnishing

Special acrylic-based sealant is used to protect concrete from moisture. It is applied with an ordinary brush for paint and after drying it creates a reliable waterproof layer. This material is very quickly absorbed and dries completely in a day, after which you can apply the second and last layer of sealant.
In order for the concrete countertops to have a glossy finish, after waterproofing a layer of varnish for concrete is applied, the drying of which takes from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the temperature in the room. After varnish dries, the slab is polished with fine-grained sandpaper M14.
In conclusion, ConcreteCountertopSolutions would like to add that although technology of manufacturing of such a countertop does not have too much complexity, for its implementation it is necessary to have skills in working with concrete. Therefore, with the absence of such a building experience, it is better to use professional help.

Something to add

If the kitchen window sill is equipped with working area or bar counter, the useful area of kitchen will increase by at least 0.5 square meters. Whether it is a lot a little – well, the owners of the small-sized apartments know that, because every centimeter for them is on account.
However, if you listen to professionals, concrete countertops on the window sills in the kitchen can be installed by no means always. On some photos the realization of the idea looks even very doubtful.
When replacing a standard window sill with a functional stove combined with a kitchen set, the owner usually pursues one or two purposes: to make a cramped and small kitchen more spacious and modernize its design. These plans are quite achievable, but with proviso that the newly emerged space is competently planned at the design stage and all the subtleties of reconstruction are observed and met.
Pros and cons:

·         saving on artificial lighting – no necessity in electric lamps

·         possibility of installing additional drawers, storage cabinets, and even a washing machine or a dishwasher

·         clear zones separation, due to which a small room becomes more orderly

·         having a beautiful view from the window, an owner can watch it together with cooking – distraction from routine

·         improving kitchen design

BUT:

·         convection violation – not effective thermal curtain, bad mist of the window panels

·         instability of window structure

·         increased contamination – the use of a window sill as a working surface inevitably leads to appearance of colored and greasy spot
