The Road Video

~The Video~

Objectives:

Create a video using Camtasia that captures your response to The Road. You might develop a video that reads the book in terms of a motif or key question. You could compose a piece that connects the story to a contemporary concern or intellectual question. You could use the text as a prompt for a creative response that deploys artistic video strategies to engage viewers. The topic is flexible, but there is one requirement: you must incorporate sonic elements that extend beyond music and you must include your voice. These parameters are also flexible. You can include music, but will want to weave in additional sounds. The use of your voice can take different forms, narration can be a helpful path, but there might be other possibilities.

As long as you make deliberate use of these sonic elements, the other options for the video are flexible. You can no doubt tap into the skills and strategies you have developed working on the e-poem. And you may want to push the limits of your Camtasia expertise as well, deploying additional screen moves.

Feedback:

Professor Anderson suggests...

  • Addition of quotes from the novel
  • A clear explanation of how the literature chosen for the video relates to the novel
  • Rethinking the placement of the layered clips

Reflection:
This project was the one that I was looking most forward to all semester.  When I submitted my first video, I liked it but also knew that it definitely was not my best work.  What I liked about the video, however, was the ambiance and tones present in the background footage. I think the clips I selected from the movie The Road blended nicely together with tones of the walking in the woods footage. Additionally, I also really liked the excerpts from the other materials that I incorporated into the video.

With that being said, I agree 100% with the feedback I received. I can see how the link between the song, poem, and short story is unclear. When it came time for revisions, I saw two ways to solve this issue: add a more explicit introduction and include direct quotes from the novel. This way, the spoken word in the video and the quotations flashing on the screen, as well as the images and video behind the words,  all directly paralleled.  In my opinion, this greatly strengthened my overall theme and made it much more clear to viewers.

The new format of my video with the powerpoint style introduction does make it seem more academic, but as  the assignment calls for the exploration of a motif, I think a good balance of academic and artistic works well. I worked really harder to carefully space out the movie clips, quotes, and speaking sections so that the viewer is never overwhelmed but also never bored during the duration of the video. Alternating these three mediums also helped to lay The Road and the other media side-by-side in comparison in order to prove that there was notable similarity between all the selections incorporated into the video.
