Bodies in Conflict: From Gettysburg to Iraq

Curator Bio

My name is Laura Bergin and I am a senior at Gettysburg College. I am a student-athlete with an Interdisciplinary Studies Major titled Images of Conflict and a double minor in Spanish and Anthropology. My major brings together many fields of study, including Journalism, Film Studies, Globalization Studies, Photography, Women’s Studies, and Latin American Studies with a base in Anthropology. I studied in Salamanca, Spain for one semester in which I stayed with a host family and took five courses in Spanish from professors at the local university, the University of Salamanca. While in Spain I also had the opportunity to travel in Europe to Belgium, France, Portugal, The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungry to witness firsthand what I have been learning in my Anthropology and Globalization Studies classes. After graduation I plan on pursuing a career in museum curation or photojournalism or attending a graduate school for Conflict and Human Rights Studies or photojournalism.

This website is the product of a ten-week long research project completed under the Mellon Summer Scholars Fund. It includes short essays about each object that was chosen to be hung in a section of Gettysburg College's Shmucker Art Gallery accompanied by an image of the work and the gallery catalog which will be available to the public. This catalog also includes a forward written by my Faculty Mentor, Professor Shannon Egan, and an introductory essay that I authored, which is also present on this site. Furthermore, I have created a virtual gallery on ArtSteps, which will allow those who were not able to visit the exhibition to experience it in 3D. I have also included a link to my Art Talk on the opening night of the exhibit, as well as my bibliography to allow those inspired by the project to view the sources I used.
