Malamud at Oregon State: A Digital Humanities Project

Geographical Reactions

Below, you'll find a map showing how people in different places reacted to the firing of Ralph Spitzer and L.R. LaVallee. Many people living outside of Oregon found out about the dismissal case when an article was published in The New York Times. Malamud came from the East Coast, and the difference in reaction highlights the cultural differences that both Malamud and Levin (Malamud's fictional main character in A New Life) encounter in their move to the West.

The gold stars indicate approval of Strand's actions in firing the two professors, while the red splats indicate disapproval of Strand's actions in firing the two professors.
