Dog Breeds Misidentified as Pit Bulls.

The confusion about other dog breeds as Pit Bulls is nothing new. Did you know that “Pit Bull” is not a single breed of dog; it refers to various breeds of pooches instead? The main reason behind this misidentification is that Pit Bulls (American Pit Bull Terrier) have an appearance resembling many other dog breeds.

The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT)
American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT) are commonly known as a Pit Bull, Pit, Pit Terrier and so on.
APBT have a bad reputation because they were originally bred to “bait” bulls. Later on when this activity became illegal, they became a farm dog before integrating into houses due to their gentleness around kids.

An American Pit Bull Terrier usually weighs 22 - 78 pounds at the height of 14 - 24 inches.
Here is the list of some dog breeds commonly misidentified as Pit Bulls:
1) The American Bulldog
American Bulldog

There are two common kinds of American Bulldog, namely standard and bully. The bully type has a shorter muzzle and with a sturdy build.

Usually, their white short fur has patches of shade.
They can weigh over 100 pounds.
Physically, the American Bulldog is bigger than the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Similarly, both breeds have a big head with an extended muzzle as well as a forceful jaw line.

2) The Presa Canario
Under the umbrella of the Mastiff dog group, they are a giant dog weighing from 80 - 100 pounds with the height of 21 - 25 inches.

In order to differentiate them from the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Presa Canario is much bigger in size.
Besides, the Presa Canario has brindle with  streaks of black, white and brown.
3) The Cane Corso Italiano
They are powerful and have long muscles weighing from 70 to 100 pounds. Their muzzle is wide and deep with a slightly arched neck.
Comparatively, the American Pit Bull Terrier is more socialized and smaller in size, whereas the Cane Corse is at least 70 pounds.
Their differences in physical appearances are also another way to distinguish them.
4) The Bull Terrier
The Bull Terrier has a rounded body as well as a short strong back. As a solid built muscular dog, their head is ovally shaped and usually with a black nose. Besides, their erect ears are small and thin.
There are two distinctive types of the Bull Terrier - the White Bull Terrier and the Colored Bull Terrier. As a Colored Bull Terrier,
They might have many different colors such as brindle, black brindle, light brown, black, red and so on. On the other hand, the White Bull Terrier has only colored markings on their head.
In order to tell them apart from the American Pit Bull Terrier, it is recognizable that the Bull Terrier has an oval-shaped head.

As a Good Lesson for Us
I am sure this list would never finish and telling one dog breed apart from the other is not an easy task.
There are many more dogs confused as An American Pit Bull Terrier . One of the many but not easy ways to differentiate them is through their physical features.
Likewise, it would be ridiculous to identify a person’s heritage through physical outlooks. Breed misidentification is not a first day issue but what lies behind it is the separation of dogs from their families, worse still euthanized because they look like a “Pit Bull”. No matter how experienced a person with dogs, misidentification still happens. It is unfair to put a dog down with mere visual identification. In order to get a more accurate answer, DNA testing must be carried out in order to prevent more innocent deaths.  Please stop judging the book by its cover.
