Stars for Freedom benefit concert on December 6, 1964 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Sammy Davis Jr. conceived the event as a fundraiser to benefit the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It was originally planned for November 25, 1963, but postponed after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.  Celebrities involved included Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Count Basie and Nelson Riddle. Sinatra, Martin, Davis Jr., and Basie hosted the gala benefit that took place after the concert. Gov. Edmund “Pat” Brown served as the honorary chairman. 1964
