ENG 501: Reflection in Student Composition Courses

Findings: Reflection Characteristics Category Analysis

Of the categories I decided to focus on "Reflection Characteristics" for closer analysis, because these terms define what the author thinks reflective writing is or should be.

I found a few similarities between the definitions and student examples. Namely, both categories included the words "focus" and "claim." So, both corpuses placed explicit value on making an argument and maintaining focus on that argument.

The differences are more apparent than the similarities, however. In the definitions and explanations corpus, "reflection" is the most frequently used word. This contrasts with the student samples' most frequently used word: "research."

These differences in frequency illustrate how the textbook definitions and student samples demonstrate different values.
