Who Benefits, Who Doesn't?

Throughout the 10 years Facebook has been around for, it is seen to be the dominant community on the Internet, and one that has grown from the free information it provides. It is clearly seen that Facebook’s process and exchange of group information attracts many businesses. These business feed off of this free information that this social media website has provided. In return, the businesses pay good money to be in the loop on Facebook, by buying advertising slots and running business pages to track user’s trends and interests. By supporting these business and pretty much selling their own user’s information, Facebook has grown into a company worth over $150 billion.“The concentration of these media thus amounts to concentrating in the hands of the administrators” (Debord 13). Facebook’s growth was seen over the 10 years it has been in business. It is shown that the free services it provides benefits them greatly. Basically using its members to gain a profit, but the users do not see themselves as being used because they also benefit by gaining a free social media provider on the Internet. Once compared to Facebook’s benefits, the user’s benefits seem like nothing. Users have started to notice this and some feel like they deserve to be paid for this information that business use. One website called Wages For Facebook explain how they are being used without pay and how Facebook is the “most pervasive form of manipulation” (Wages For Facebook). A small amount of people understand how Facebook is taking advantage of them, but the majority seems clueless and satisfied with these social media outlets while feeding priceless information into them.
