Space Colonies
This illustration from a Walt Disney World Epcot Center book depicts a common fantasy of 1970s and 1980s speculative culture, a circular space colony like the one imagined by artists for NASA and represented in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Here the focus is on automated agriculture in space, complete with a large yellow grain harvester (bottom center). The image thus represents the imaginative possibility of leaving the demands of terrestrial farm workers behind in the leap to space.
By contrast, the background image for this project, UFW Cooperative Space Station # Uno, by Royal Chicano Air Force member Ricardo Favela, was produced at the same time but represents an alternative vision of future agriculture collectively controlled by farm workers themselves.
