The Ring at the University of Miami

The Jerry Herman Ring Theater at the University of Miami opened in July 1951. However, the University's Drama Department, precursor of today's Department of Theater Arts, had been producing theater in Miami since 1936. The name came from the company's first performances which had the audience around the stage in a "ring. At that time, it was the world's largest unsupported pre-stressed concrete dome structure. It's circular design and flexible seating arrangement was covered by the national press.
