Ways to Interpret a Photo

There are many ways in which to look at a photo. And by this I don't mean opening up your eyeballs and letting the light rays move across space into your retinas. You can look at a photograph to purely appreciate the aesthetic experience. But for most of us, looking at photos means that we're trying to determine it's meaning, we're trying to figure out what it's communicating to us. In this essay, I want to examine two ways we typically think about photos: as truth and as fiction (art).
