Welcome to The Knotted Line

This project has three major components:
  • This site, a collection of educator resources, media, and data which can be navigated using the menu to the left. The Knotted Line Curriculum, which combines the best of nearly two years of workshops and lesson plans will be released this August.
What is it? These two videos give a great introduction:
3 min and 9 min.

Who is it for?
The material here has been designed to be adaptable for use in middle school through college, as well as in community groups, and can serve as a springboard for one class or for the spine of a semester.

What does it cover? The site includes discussion and writing prompts for each historical moment covered, along with related media, lesson plans, and teacher questions.

How does it work? By presenting its content through multiple modalities, the project aims to develop visual literacy, analysis and interpretation skills through an accessible and engaging tool for connecting past to present. In addition, the site incorporates moderated visitor comments for a collaborative, growing context.

Where should I go from here? Start by exploring the Timeline. This path presents specific historical moments through short texts and linked media, along with discussion questions and links to additional online resources.

Next, dive into Future Possibilities. This path charts hypothetical future events in order to spark discussion about where society is headed, with pages following the same format as those on the historical timeline.

To browse through the visuals of the project independently of the other content, try the Paintings and Silhouettes paths.

If you're an educator browse the Educator Resources for ways to integrate The Knotted Line in your work.

Those with coding skills may be interested in the Data Sources path. In the spirit of open access, the data which drives The Knotted Line has been made publicly available, and this path explains how that data is organized and structured—remixes and mashups are welcomed!

As a final note, The Knotted Line draws upon existing content from a wide array of sources. Original content published here is made available under a Creative Commons license.

Thanks for your time—now, dive in.
