2016: Catching Up to Reality

With the War on Drugs seen as a colossal failure by the public and analysts alike, marijuana is legalized nationwide, leading to a vast decrease in drug arrests.

Update from 2014: Washington and Colorado both legalized marijuana in 2012, while many other states have decriminalized it and/or made it available for conditional or medical use. See this map for an updated list.

Discussion Questions:
  • With so much information and so many people calling the drug war a failure, why does it persist?
  • Compare and contrast marijuana, alcohol and tobacco. Why would one be illegal and the other legal? In your experience, which is more closely related to violence and lack of safety? Why was the 18th Amendment eventually repealed?
  • Look at the prohibition posters. What kinds of rhetoric do they use? What fears do they play on? Who do they imagine as being corruptible and in need of protection?
