Theatre of the Oppressed at Changing Ways
Changing Ways was founded out of a collaboration of the Office of Restorative Justice and an 2011-2012 Applied Theatre Arts internship. The gentlemen were recruited to participate in and Theatre of the Oppressed project dealing with issues of mass incarceration of black and brown youth, the pathway to prison and who profits from the prison industrial complex. Out of that experience, Changing Ways was born. Many of the members have continued to develop their jokering skills in the week long intensive Theatre of the Oppressed training led by Brent Blair as well as participating in TO classes at USC.
Since August 2012, I have been exploring a variety of TO games and techniques with Changing Ways. Although we started out with an intention of building theatre to work with youth, the focus shifted to using TO tools to deal with issues that were coming up in their daily lives as they face the stigma of being a formerly incarcerated individual, how to keep Changing Ways sustainable as the members have more and more work and family obligations and wrestling with a very large question, Who are you?

Through this exploration, we used a variety of techniques, including Image Theatre, Forum Theater and Rainbow of Desire work.
