Developing Community Agreements

We had to reestablish community agreements in the spring semester. We had discussed them briefly and rather loosely in the fall, but without them having a physical presence, they were difficult to keep in mind and follow. After a few particularly antagonistic weeks, I brought in community agreements again. We wrote them down and kept them present for the rest of our time together. It helped to have them there so that when the conversation took a turn that was unproductive to our work and who we chose to be, we could check in with our agreements and get back on track more easily.

These agreements also helped me to maintain my personal boundaries in the space. Although it was cut off in the photograph, the hugs and/or high fives agreement came with the condition that both parties had to give permission.
